genuinely, i think steven universe is the first fat positive media i’ve ever seen.

sure, steven likes eating donuts, fries, and pizza, but that’s never turned into a joke, nor does that make him look bad for liking junk food. in steven universe future, although he doesn’t eat the same things as before, he’s still fat. amethyst also eats everything she sees, but that’s more because she’s a gem and she can eat anything she wants, not because of her body.

greg is comedic relief, but never because of his weight. the same counts for ronaldo.

smoky quartz is probably one of my favorite fusions in the show. though they’re very insecure, the target is not their fatness.

rose quartz is beautiful, and loved and desired by two people. EDIT: it’s confirmed she has involved with other humans too!

the body diversity of steven universe is truly amazing, but the love and respect to fat people is certainly one of its virtues.

No I agree with this! The only “fat joke” is when Steven said the boat was too fat in “Steven and the Stevens.” Nobody ever implies that being chubby is a detriment to anyone’s ability to save the world, and Steven’s very natural interest in junk food is EXACTLY what most unsupervised or supervised-by-guardians-who-know-nothing-about-nutrition kids would do–and it’s never hinted to make Steven a lazy or less respectable person. They never look at the camera and say REMEMBER KIDS, IT’S OKAY TO BE A BIGGER PERSON!–they just show diversity in body sizes and acknowledge that sometimes there IS a relationship between bigger bodies and certain diets–it doesn’t necessarily mean the person is unhealthy (or that being unhealthy would render them less worthy of respect or kind treatment). And since Gems are the size they are presumably without EVER eating in almost 100% of cases, it’s a great way to show that some people Just Are Big and fat-shaming critics can’t insist that they are “unhealthy” characters no one should respect. You don’t know anything about someone’s health or relationship with food just by looking at their body size.

I want to see many more shows with multiple larger characters.

Steven Universe got blatantly and unapologetically cancelled by the network because the creators pushed for a lesbian wedding, and instead of going, "oh, fuck, that's incredibly homophobic, we should give Cartoon Network hell for that for the rest of forever, holy shit," everyone collectively decided to blame the crew for "rushing the ending" as if it wasn't completely out of their hands. Fuck's sake.

renthony

"Ren why do you even care so much?"

Because I study queer media history as a hobby, am working on an intense project on media censorship, and the way Steven Universe was treated is a fucking textbook example of queer content getting shut down by the powers-that-be.

It was literally censored in reaction to its inclusion of queer content. This isn't a secret and it never has been. Rebecca Sugar has been completely open about how hard they had to fight against homophobia at Cartoon Network. Steven Universe is a case study of anti-queer censorship from a mindset of "think of the children."

Steven Universe is a historically significant piece of queer media, and watching in real-time as it went from "progressive queer show" to "the subject of the most rancid bad-faith discourse I have ever seen" is genuinely alarming to me as a queer media hobby-historian.

it’s so funny to me when I point out t*rfs I was on HRT at 12 as an intersex kid, and they’ll do be like “that’s different!!”

not really???

I as a 12 year old had the same capacity to consent to that treatment as a 12 year old trans kid would. no one batted an eye about me being on those hormones.

“but you have an intersex condition!!!” so is it that you don’t view the gender dysphoria many trans kids experience as a valid medical condition worthy of respect and treating the way professionals recommend? or is it that you don’t mind those weird intersex freaks taking things that will make us ‘more normal’? or perhaps both?

As of Saturday afternoon, Boebert’s lead is only 1,122 votes!

insomniac-arrest

Yes! Right now it looks like no matter what this race is probably going to head to a recount with these kinds of close margins

So, every vote is really going to count. And according to the Director of Elections in Mesa County there are 800 cast ballots currently in need of signature verification:
