WONDER (2017)

DIR: Stephen Chbosky

Honestly, WONDER had my stone cold heart on edge and my eyes filling with tears in the privacy of the back row of a dark theater. I say, with confidence, it is one of the most charming and heartwarming movies that was released last year.

A character driven film, we follow the stories of many unique individuals. Auggie, the star, with his facial imperfections (who Jacob Tremblay did a wonderful job portraying, and had an excellent makeup team since I kept on forgetting it was him playing the part). Olivia, and her struggle with being noticed or cared about in her family. Miranda, and her insecurities and fear of not being accepted for the person she is. The bullies, the friends, the parents just being parents. Each story is heartbreaking, triumphant, and relatable. I remember the days of bullies, feeling unattractive, and not feeling good enough. In this film, each act of bullying made my heart break, and each act of kindness made my heart swell. Both led to tears of different kinds.

I happened to watch this in a theater with quite a large audience. Normally this would annoy me, but the commentary of fellow audience members only added to the movie: the laughs, the gasps, the awwws. We shared these moments of triumph when Jack Will stands up for the underdog, a gasp of love when Via finds someone who makes her feel important, and laughs throughout at Owen Wilson being the perfect dorky dad (side note: If Wilson is the perfect dad, isn’t Julia Roberts the perfect mom actress? I love seeing her in parts like this).

I’m thrilled that so many elementary school students read the book and saw this film in their classes. The kids are so realistic and real for that demographic, and I really hope they related to the film and were able to learn something from it.

This film has many sad moments as the precious Auggie gets bullied and hurt, but there is also so much to smile about as he gains friends, shows off his smarts, and chooses to be kind no matter what the odds. It more than deserves the cliché happy ending it has. I truly felt like his parents clapping at the end: proud that this fictional child made it through school and eventually had a good time.

There are so many valuable lessons to be learned from this film. It’s summed up best by their own campaign: Choose Kind. Please always choose kind. This film is truly a wonder, and so are all of you ♥

okay!!!!! but wonder was so fucking amazing. what a beautiful story and message. directed by the same man behind the perks of being a wallflower!!! i loved the book but didn’t know what to expect from the film and let me fucking tell you!!!! i started sobbing 2 minutes in and didn’t stop til I fucking got home from the theater. I FELL IN LOVE WITH EVERY CHARACTER AND THEIR STORY AND I WAS SO INVESTED THE WHOLE DAMN TIME. this was the perfect family movie except my mom was throwing shade the whole time i was crying my fucking brains out. jacob tremblay was a perfect little angel!!!!! and omg noah jupe as jack will just about melted my damn fucking heart. this story/ movie is just so heartwarming and fun and sad and meaningful and tender and upligting. omg i need to see it again i have so many feelings!!!! just watching the trailer makes me sob or listening to brand new eyes by bea miller lmao. so real and relatable yet still a very unique story told from a perspective we don’t get to see often. julia roberts was such a treasure and so was owen wilson and izabela vidovic. they made up the most perfect family. choose kindness!!! the quotes and the different lessons really hit hard!! the kids really fucking shined to me. like the parents and the other adults and their messages of acceptance and unconditional love and empathy were great but man. the way jack will and summer treated auggie RUINED ME in the best way. watching kids just be outstanding examples of kindness, love, and acceptance IS SO AMAZING TO ME. i cried so fucking hard. i was happy sobbing, sad sobbing, and just sobbing because i was so damn touched by the way these kids acted around eachother. jack will and summer and auggie were so pure and beautiful and sweet. literally the cutest!!! and when all the other kids started accepting auggie my heart grew a million times more. i was so damn emotional the whole fucking time. NOAH JUPE IS SO CUTE OH MY GOD MY PURE PRECIOUS SON I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. every little thing he did was so cute he is so cute i just want to squeeze him. jacob tremblay was so perfect but noah jupe stole the show for me ugh!!! the affection and friendship between jackwill and auggie was everything!!! so refreshing and rare to see two boys like that truly just express how they feel without it being seen negatively. idk i just appreciated it a lot and it is such a wonderful friendship and it brought me to tears and warmed my damn heart. they did so well in this movie. ANYWAY GO SEE THIS MOVIE. BE NICE TO OTHERS. BEYOND A FACE THERE’S A HEART. UGH  I LOVED WONDER SO MUCH BYE IM STILL SOBBING THIS MOVIE WAS SO PURE
