If this happens, people struggling with their mental health and/or abusive situations, especially teenagers, will have to pay for access to the many hotline/chat services for suicide/crisis prevention, mental health support, drug safety and intervention, and general information about life they don’t teach in school/sex ed. The many forums that exist for all types of disorders/illnesses, if they can afford to stay afloat, will likely come in a separate “Forum” bundle, too. And since we are talking primarily about teenagers here, they will more likely ask their parents to buy these things for them, which is a problem for very obvious reasons.
Have you ever talked someone down from suicide over the internet? Helped them when they were cutting? Gave them emotional support at a fragile time? Becuase without net neutrality, a lot of those people will be out of your reach. A lot of them rely on their internet friends, because they may live in a shitty ass place, full of ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and racism. This is their safe place, this is what keeps them alive.
How many people figured out that they are normal, valid, and ok, all because of the internet? I’m willing to bet a lot of you reading this. Perhaps, because of the internet, you found out what being transgender was, and you just knew. Maybe, you realized that being asexual didn’t mean you were broken. Possibly you’ve seen others go through your same struggle, with depression, anxiety, bipolar, phobias, etc, and suddenly you were not alone.
Now imagine the next generation of kids growing up without this.

Hey guys, so I’m gonna have to put a pause on all of my projects for a bit. My parents had a terrible fire at their house; the living room, kitchen and their bedroom is trashed. They’re all fine and weren’t home, but the hit was still big. They lost appliances, 20+ year old family photos, but worst of all, the pets that were trapped inside couldn’t be revived. My mother is devastated.
My family is currently barred from staying at the house and are at a hotel off of $900 Red Cross provided them, but knowing food costs, hotel prices, and gas to get the kids to school each day, that will barely last them a week. I want to help them the best that I can, so I’m opening commissions with no foreseeable slot limit - I just really want to help fund them to pay for cleaning, repairs, and replacements.
I know that I can never really replace their babies (my brother’s cat and my mom’s cat & birds), but I also intend to get hopefully each of them a kitten for Christmas to at least ease the blow of losing Lucyfer and Carly. So I’m keeping adoption fees with the necessary surgery payments (shots, spay/neuter) as goals in mind as well.

I absolutely agree with rephrasing the letters and redoubling efforts but as cathartic as it is to send letters directly to Ajit Pai, it’s misdirecting useful energy. He is about as anti-net neutrality as it is physically possible to be and even if you are a lawyer and you send perfectly phrased legalese to him, he is not going to change his position. The key here is to send messages to people that can potentially be swayed.

It sure does. Big companies have been censoring content and voices for years, but without net neutrality they’ll basically be getting paid to do it en masse. It’ll get way worse way fast.

in general i would say that “it’s not fun if they’re totally unrecognisable” is my fandom thesis. like the point of fanfic etc is putting your favourite little guys in situations. where’s the appeal if they’ve been through so many fanon spin cycles that they’re barely even your guys anymore
