The crystal gems always complained that he had to take stuff more seriously.. And rewarded him with praise when he “did better”
He has so much serious responsibility..
He’s serious now. No fun.. And honestly? Part of this is the time skip? We didn’t get to see him develop slowly. We are like the gems here, we see kid Steven, then he’s grown up and serious. And these callbacks are jarring.. Good job crewniverse
The way this is done is really pursing the loss of childhood and how serious Steven has been made to grow… By the circumstances around him.
I want to see Steven get excited about something again.. Or laugh.. Cause that almost never happens now.
The gems don’t know who Steven has grown into..
Because Steven is only defining himself by what he is not.

What backpack do you use now? Does it have buttons? Patches?
What food do you cook or bake? Can you do that with the gems?
What books do you read now? Do you play videogames still? Board games?
