Pokemon Card of the Day #1739: Pachirisu (Plasma Freeze)

Pachirisu cards, believe it or not, had a history of getting Energy. The Call of Legends version was important to a very nice deck for getting Energy when coming into play and letting Shaymin move it to Zekrom, after all. This one had to attack to get said Energy, but that Energy wasn’t limited by type and went to the hand to be distributed from there. While this didn’t seem to work as smoothly as the last one, there were still a couple of decks that might like this sort of thing, making Pachirisu worth a look.

70 HP was quite expected for a Basic Pokemon that existed to support its deck at the beginning of a game, though it wasn’t enough to survive for too long after that. The Fighting Weakness could be a big problem with things like Landorus EX and Lucario EX wandering around. It was very possible that Pachirisu would fall on the first turn if the opponent was able to attack. One nice thing was that Pachirisu could retreat for a single Energy, making it very reasonable to do so if desired.

Minor Errand-Running was the one thing Pachirisu had going for it. It required a Colorless Energy for use and let you search your deck for 2 basic Energy cards and put them into your hand. This was nice for decks that could play multiple Energy in a turn using something like Blastoise or Emboar. Said decks tended to have plenty of drawing power already, but the guarantee here was tempting if nothing else.

Electric Tail was awful. 10 damage and a flip for Paralysis wasn’t even worth the low price of a Lightning Energy.

Pachirisu did a job, and barring starting on the wrong turn (depending on format since the first turn rules changed on the release of the XY set) against a Fighting-type, it did it rather well. The problem was that said job wasn’t enough of a boost above all of the cards that could rush through a deck in a hurry and find Energy and other cards that way. Pachirisu was functional but not something that fit into many decks.
