@leonawriter

I know this isn’t canon but can you imagine him wearing this during his transition from Hobo!Phoenix into DD!Phoenix? It’d might fit quite well as he tries to shake off old habits. Until Edgeworth gets annoyed and gets him a waistcoat.

Kinda like, he won’t wear the beanie, but he can still be comfortable in a sweater. Plus the stubble is still there!

Heavily agreed on ‘thank god we didn’t get the beard’ because Phoenix NO.

But as for the rest? I can definitely see that. It’s a mid-way point - it’s using the style of the way he dressed in his disbarred days, but the colour scheme of his time as an actual lawyer; although he’s wearing a suit jacket and trousers and the sandals have disappeared, there’s a whole different feeling when he’s wearing a sweater.

I wonder - if, perhaps, he at this point already has the waistcoat, but he simply chooses not to wear it just yet, because he doesn’t feel ready yet? This looks like they’re still using the old suit from before - the cut is the same - but perhaps the actual one they ended up choosing (perhaps that he chose with Edgeworth’s help) is hung up waiting for it’s time to shine?

Which makes me think that they could have used this in-between design for some of the cases in the game itself, such as the Monstrous Turnabout (which is set before he gets his badge back) and Turnabout Reclaimed, when he’s still getting used to the fact that he has it back - making his appearance when he first wears the suit as it was meant to be worn more striking. He’s finally come into his own, and he’s retaking his respect in full.

(I’d say something about how much of a mess the timeline of DD was and how it makes a mockery of anyone trying to make a proper chronology, but that’s for another time.)

Sorry, but. I thought of this and got emotional

To add on, what if the first time he wears the full new suit is when he knows he’s going to have to take over for Apollo in Turnabout Countdown? We even see him put the final touches on for the first time in the anime cutscene before the first case we play, so why not?

And his reasoning is that this isn’t just him he’s representing, he’s going there to replace Apollo, and he wants Apollo to know that he’s taking the trial seriously. And he wants Apollo to see him, and be proud

Phoenix wanting to live up to why Apollo wanted to look up to him way back when in the first place.
