i was gonna wait until i had a Perfect Post in mind, or new stuff to show, or could offer commissions, but that won’t be for a minute, since i wanna prioritize some irl stuff first. so I’m just gonna throw this here before i get started on my day!
my name is dan. if you don’t know me at all, i’ve been on tumblr forever and ever, and make comics and zines about identity stuff and creatures under the alias @thegiantrat. in september of last year, i left my job because it was time to move on, and because my mental health was on a rapid and scary decline. the idea was to take a scheduled pause of 1-2 months to go back to therapy, tend to my physical health, get back on meds, and jump back in, but by the time my feet were back under me, the holidays were starting. this made communicating with employers next to impossible, i was stuck between “too late for seasonal” and “too soon for spring”. with that nonsence, coupled with a health crisis, i didnt find employment until the first of January
however, events out of my control lead to my termination yesterday, after only 2 shifts. now i’m back on the hunt, which is scary, because not only am i starting from square one again, but now I have almost 5 months of unemployment to explain, dwindling financial padding, and most of my leads from december have gone cold. on top of this, because that wasn’t enough i guess, my foodstamp ppl bugged me about my income during the little 2 week window when i was “employed fulltime”, so there’s a chance my benefits for February will either be delayed or just gone as a result.
i’ll be okay! i’m gonna have to be. but if anyone was interested in a zine, i have a bunch of physical stuff (as well as digital sketchbooks) on my gumroad. here’s some synopses and teaser pages for a few of them. i also have a patreon, where 5$ patrons get physical goodies and everyone gets early acess pages of my webcomic, @tryingreallyhard debut. if youre feeling generous, i also have a ko-fi.
I will probably open commissions in the next week or two, but for now I am going to focus on finding a day job, because i don’t interest in being dependent on online income longterm. i like my stuff to be cheap or free, and hopefully soon i can say that without an undercurrent of anxiety.
