Hi im Blu welcome to my fakemon TED talk
1. When designing evolutions (in particular mid-stage evolutions) for fakemon, make sure each of them has something unique, fun and worthwhile about them. To be frank, don’t just make the same Pokemon but bigger!
There’s a lot of cases where this sorta happens in gen 1 in particular, for Pokemon like Ivysaur, Charmeleon, Rapidash and the like. In these cases, the changes in body language, personality (eye style/expression), palette (in many cases) and special details (Rapidash’ differently-styled flames) serve to set them apart. Some even have unique things that don’t continue to their final forms, like Wartortle’s fluffy ears and fluffy tail.
There are many charming things about gen 1′s simple approach to designs, but be sure to analyse just why and how they work before applying them to your own fakemon design. None of your fakemon should just be “throwaway” Pokemon, they must all have the potential to appeal to somebody. Electrode’s big change in personality and eye style makes it super likeable to me for instance, even if on paper it’s basically a flipped Voltorb. It makes a world of difference!
In a lot of cases, it’s probably worth taking more of a later gen approach where evolutions change more drastically. Torchic, Combusken and Blaziken have a big variation in shapes, for example, and all look pretty dang unique when you compare them. Combusken isn’t just a bigger Torchic, nor a smaller Blaziken - it works as its own individual. And even despite that, common thematics throughout its evolution line tie it all together.
Above all else, try to make things that are exciting for your fakemon to evolve into. Make it worth all the training and effort!
2. Draw your fakemon more than once, and in different poses. It really changes how you perceive your designs, and can really bring them to life! It can also help you spot how to refine certain details and how to make your design function even better.
For Psypha, I’d always end up drawing it in the above pose as its “default” (for sprites and the like, too)…
…and now after drawing a new picture in a new pose, it’s like I’m seeing it again for the very first time! Dang!! It’s really helping me solidify its design more and feel more confident about it.
Thank u for ur time I love Pokemon and I love fakemon
