i’m in love with the way tove jansson designs her female characters pretty much exactly the same as any of the others. round and a little bit odd looking. now that’s what i call good character design.
like. there’s not an impossibly tiny waist or freakily long eyelash in sight. none of the characters are sexualised or otherwise designed differently just because they’re female. even snorkmaiden, who is probably the most feminine of all the characters in jansson’s works, isn’t defined as such by her appearance. she has pretty much the exact same hair and body type as her brother snork, and hasn’t been given boobs to mark her out as “the girl one” like a lot of female anthropomorphic animals in cartoons are. and none of them are striking “sexy” poses or only interested in traditionally “feminine” things. i’m not trying to say that tove jansson is the most progressive person to ever live because she wasn’t but it’s like she, idk, recognised that women can look and act like regular people or something.
