“Eggman is finally dead and now [insert villain here] is going t-”

me: *exits tab immediately*

I always expect this but when it happens at the literal first opening line? It’s an even bigger smack in the face. Like we get it, y'all really just want him dead and it’s often just so the story focuses more on the new edgy villain of the week instead, as if that’s the only way to go about it too :\

Whenever a new villain kills Eggman off, and it’s not for character development (i.e., exploring a scenario where Sonic has to deal with the prospect of living without the thrills Eggy’s schemes provide), I start to think maybe the writer did so because they didn’t know what to do with him. 

And, like, that’s fine in and of itself, I guess? You’re not gonna know how every character fits in every story.

On the other hand… I don’t get why they’d do that. He’s one of the most fun characters to write. You get to go balls-out and have him do evil, crazed, wacked-out things, and nobody would bat an eye. It’s just plain fun writing him doing badass stuff. Plus, you can write all the jokes and put-downs you want! Eggman gives NO shits whatsoever and I live for it.

Also, even if we accept the premise that Eggman kicked the bucket, why does an OC villain have to be the one to take the reins? Why not make the new guy one of his established lackeys? Why not just write something where Starline or Metal Sonic or Snively has to take charge?

I only accept ‘eggman is dead’ fics when it’s set in the far future and even then it’s THIN ICE

… I wrote a fic where he is and isn’t dead, if that makes sense? In flash-forwards, he’s already dead but Shadow’s still thinking about it and its consequences, and in the present fic he’s dying (of something he couldn’t foresee or prevent). Like, the entire point of the plot was to show him in the process of dying and how it affects him and the other characters, and I prefer to think it wasn’t just to be like “lol he ded”

So I do think there may be a gray area; it’s just more often than not the aforementioned kinds of fics tend to treat it like “welp, he died, Sonic’s skipping through the flowers, tra la la~”
