Watching IZ as a kid I always assumed Professor Membrane was a neglectful parent and was constantly disappointed/ashamed of his son. But after the movie I've gone back and rewatched some episodes. It becomes apparent that although he is busy a lot, and he does think Dib is wasting his time with his paranormal activities, Professor Membrane loves his children. He tries to schedule family dinner whenever he has time. He makes recordings, he facetimes them, he invites them to his latest invention unveilings and gives them seats of honor (to which he tried to introduce them to the crowd.) I now realize that, for a world famous scientist, he does his best. He's not perfect. But he's always trying in his own small way to let his kids know that he loves them.
