Back in 2019 i found a guide to equipment used by protesters in Hong Kong. I think it's useful and a lot of it could be applied to protests happening in the us:

actually disregard what i said about leaving your phone at home. turn off your location, but bring the phone in case you witness police brutality and need to record it

Do not bring your phone.

Turning off the location (or turning your phone off) does not stop it from pinging cell towers, which can get you tracked down.

"Recording police brutality" won't do shit except expose faces of your fellow protesters and serve as potential proof that you were there. Nothing will be done about it if it gets on social media except get people on trouble.
