I wonder if people say this about people standing in line at a movie theater. Or buying gas to go on a camping trip. Or picking up ice cream at the grocery store. Or buying a paperback book.

You have to let people pay for entertainment without being shitty about it. You have to let people spend money on little things that bring them joy without trying to excoriate them with guilt over not using their entertainment money to feed a child or buy someone else's medicine.

Do you know why? Because otherwise the burn out and become incapable of helping anyone even when they want to.

Anyway, if you pull this shit on one of my posts I'm blocking you.

guilt and shame aren't effective motivators to drive justice, mercy, or mutual aid. someone who is ashamed or guilty, someone who is scrambling to address their own inner badness, is acting from a desire to feel less awful. therefore their actions will not be thoughtful and effective at addressing anyone else's pain but their own.

in causing more pain to others, to motivate them to help other others, you're just kind of making the amount of pain in the world denser and more complex.

so like. don't do that.
