Today I learned the highly saturated coloring on all of the gen 1-2 Sugimori Pokemon art was only like that because of shitty quality scans somebody made over 20 years ago that then got circulated all over the net. Tauros’s art for example actually looks like this. What the fuck.

there’s a bit of nuance to this - these weren’t just bad scans that got arbitrarily spread across the internet, they were bad scans that were used consistently in international official materials and you will see the blown out colored versions if you open up old 90s guidebooks and the like! the new and properly colored scans are from a japanese pokedex book
